DAVID JOHN HOOSON 1936-2024
Posted on 24 Dec 2024
Former partner and consultant of Swayne Johnson Solicitors, and Diocesan Registrar for
the Diocese of St Asaph
It is with deep sadness that the current Directors of Swayne Johnson Solicitors share that Mr
David John Hooson passed away peacefully in the early hours of 22 December 2024.
Many of us had the great privilege of working with David (or “Mr Hooson” as he was known to
many) while he was a partner and then a consultant for the firm from 1968 until 2011. Mr Hooson
was also the Diocesan Registrar and Legal Secretary to the Bishop of St Asaph for 38 years from
January 1973 until his retirement in 2011. David and his wife, Eirlys, lived and raised their two
daughters, Jacqui and Karen, at Segrwyd Hall in Denbigh. He was well-known and highly
respected, both personally and professionally, and was liked and loved by many for his
gentlemanly demeanour, his gentle good humour, and animated story-telling. David became
well-known for sharing stories of cases with which he had been involved over the years, and he
would also generously share his great knowledge of the history of the firm specifically, and the
legal history of Denbigh and Denbighshire more generally.
More recently, David and Eirlys moved down to Hampshire to be near Jacqui and Karen. The move
was well timed, as Eirlys sadly passed away in March this year.
David’s passing marks the end of an era for the firm and he will be missed by a great many who
will have fond memories of him, and the many kindnesses which he and Eirlys shared with
everyone they met.
On behalf of my co-Directors, former and current colleagues we pay our respects to this great
man who represents such a huge part of our firm’s heritage.
Our thoughts are with Jacqui and Karen, grandsons George and Alfie and all the family.
